Alaska Sourdough History & Brick Oven Pizza Making
Description
This experience is an easygoing way to enjoy local flavors, learn about Alaska's history, and spend time in downtown Ketchikan. It blends a short, informative introduction with hands-on cooking and a relaxed sit-down meal, all in a comfortable indoor space with scenic views. The total experience lasts about 3 hours from the Ward Cove Cruise Terminal or roughly 2.5 hours from the Downtown Visitor Center.
Once transported to the restaurant, the experience begins with a brief overview of Alaska’s sourdough tradition. You’ll learn how sourdough starter became an important part of local life and how it’s still used today to make pizza dough. The explanation is casual and easy to follow, and no previous cooking experience is required.
You’ll then create your own individual pizza. Guests can choose classic toppings like pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella, and peppers, or opt for Alaska-inspired combinations such as smoked salmon, lemon ricotta, hot honey, pickled red onions, and house-made meatballs. Your pizza is cooked in a brick oven and served fresh and hot.
The meal is enjoyed on a balcony overlooking historic downtown Ketchikan, with views of nearby streets and buildings below. One local beer or wine is included, along with non-alcoholic options like soda, tea, or coffee. Dessert features a crisp cannoli filled with sweet cream and chocolate chips.
Before the experience ends, you’ll receive a sourdough starter kit to take home. Afterward, you may return by vehicle or choose to explore historic Creek Street on your own.
