Description
This is a great option if you want a slower, more focused wildlife experience while you’re in Hoonah. You’ll spend around 4 hours exploring Chichagof Island, an area known for its large population of brown bears.
You’ll be picked up right at the cruise terminal, which makes things easy from the start. From there, you’ll head out with a small group, no more than six guests, into areas where bears are most often seen. The small group size really makes a difference. It keeps things quiet and gives everyone a better view when wildlife appears.
The drive takes you through a mix of forest roads, streams, and open areas where bears like to feed and move around. Your guide keeps track of recent activity and adjusts the route based on where sightings have been happening. Instead of rushing from one spot to the next, you’ll spend time in places where there’s a real chance of seeing something.
A lot of the experience is about being patient. You might be watching a stream or a clearing for a while, just taking in the surroundings. Then, if a bear comes through, you’ll have the time to actually observe it instead of just catching a quick glimpse.
Along the way, you may also see bald eagles and Sitka black-tailed deer. It’s a quiet, natural setting, and the pace stays easy throughout.
