An unforgettable ride with Alaskan huskies is set amongst a surreal backdrop of ice-capped peaks. This is one of our favorite Juneau shore excursions!

What to expect and what not to expect with this Juneau shore excursion

This Juneau adventure excursion begins with a pick-up at the cruise docks and a short ride over to the heli-base. Meet your pilot-guide and go over a brief safety orientation before lifting off for an unforgettable ride. Nervous excitement during take-off is quickly overwhelmed by the majestic views of the expansive glaciated icefields, snow-capped mountain peaks and a seemingly endless horizon of mountains. Your knowledgeable and skilled pilot-guide narrates the journey and soon enough you'll arrive at Herbert Glacier; don't forget this tour is just beginning.

  • Helicopter flight with remote landing on Herbert Glacier
  • Join Alaskan husky teams for a sled ride on snow
  • Limited availability, book early
  • About 1.5 hours duration from take-off to return at heli base

The excitement of the Alaskan husky racers can immediately be felt, and they know that their opportunity to run is close - you won't believe the power that a team of 12-14 dogs can generate! Time with the professional mushers provides an opportunity to learn more about the teams and mushing life, a deeply rooted aspect of Alaskan and Northern culture. After the ride, re-board the helicopter for the return ride where you might say to yourself, "Did that really just happen?".

For a slightly longer experience and an extra glacier landing, you might consider the Helicopter & Dogsled Glacier Excursion with Extra Landing for the ultimate adventure.

You've got questions, we've got answers
Q:Is the dogsled tour on an actual glacier?
Yes, the dogsled operator is flown up via helicopter early in the season and sets up camp on the Herbert Glacier in advance of the summer tours.
Q:Will there be snow at the dog camp?
Yes. Our dog sleds are similar to any you might see in professional competition and require a certain amount of snow in order to operate.
Q:Will I get to stand and mush the dogsled team?
You do have the option and opportunity to stand in the musher’s position while on the dogsled tour. For safety reasons, the actual dogsled musher will be able to assume control of the dogsled at all times, but will give you instructions on how to safely control the sled for the duration of your trip.
Q:How many passengers per helicopter?
Each helicopter can seat up to 6 passengers, provided the weight and balance calculations work out in each aircraft.
Q:How many people per dogsled?
Each team of 10 – 12 Alaskan huskies is hooked up to a double sled arrangement, which allows for up to 5 passengers per dogsled team. We generally keep bookings at 12 passengers each hour, so the usual load out for each team is 4 passengers, but we can make just about any grouping work.
Q:What if my tour group is larger than 6 people?
There are several helicopters available at the base and can make accommodations for larger groups with advance notice. If your group exceeds 6 passengers and requires the use of multiple aircraft, we instruct the pilots to coordinate landing locations on the glacier so that you can have your landing time together.
Q:Why do you land on the Herbert Glacier?
We find the Herbert Glacier to be of particular charm and seclusion. Most passengers on our helicopter tours feel like they’re the only people in the world while on their glacier landing, and we like to keep it that unique and exclusive for everyone.
Q:Will the pilot get out with us?
Definitely. Your pilot will act as your guide for your entire helicopter tour, including the time you’ll spend on the glacier. This allows for a truly focused tour experience.
Q:Will we see wildlife on the tour?
There is a good chance wildlife will be seen during your tour, either in flight or while on the glacier. However, this is not a wildlife viewing tour and we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife.
Q:Can children come on the tour?
Absolutely! We are more than happy to accommodate children of all ages and there are several car seats available for customers to use.
Q:What happens if the weather is too bad to fly?
If the weather is just not cooperating and the pilots determine that it’s too bad to fly, we’ll do our best to reschedule you to a later time of day that works for you. If you choose not to reschedule or we can’t find a time that works for you, we will refund you.
Q:What if I need extra help on the tour?
Your pilot will be with you the entire tour, so they’ll be happy to lend a helping hand whenever necessary. If you require extra assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us ahead of your tour and discuss your particular needs.
Q:Will our group all be in the same helicopter?
The helicopters hold up to 6 people. While we strive to keep all groups under 6 together, in order to balance the weight distribution in the helicopter & ensure a safe flight, groups may be split up into separate helicopters upon reaching the helicopter base. If this is the case, you will still land with the rest of your party on the glacier, and will be able to spend this time with them.

This excursion was beyond our expectations!!!! The best excursion we took while in Alaska. Something that should definitely not be missed. Scott our pilot was awesome, Jim the musher was friendly, took his time
with us and answered all our questions and it was fantastic spending time on the actual sleds. We would highly recommend this excursion!!

Worth it!

This excursion was a little bit of a splurge for me and my husband but I think it was worth it! It was such an awesome experience I get butterflies just thinking about it. The guides were awesome and helpful. I really appreciated that when we were on the glacier mushing, the trainer gave us opportunities to take pictures so that we could remember our experience. I'm pretty sure I took over 200 pictures during our day in Juneau and I'm so glad I did so I can remember everything.
Even though we were a little bit nervous about booking an excursion not through the cruise ship, it worked out great and we are so glad we booked through Alaska Shore Tours! It was such an incredible experience, my husband and I were in disbelief after we finished and got back on the ship. We couldn't believe what we just experienced! I would definitely recommend this excursion.

Everything went very smoothly for us as we booked this during a stopover on a cruise. The driver was there as planned and got us to the airport right on time. The helicopter ride was incredible and everyone was very professional. Kids and adults alike enjoyed the dog sledding on the glacier. No complaints ...maybe just a bit longer. Overall a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

Great time in the helicopter and snow dog sledding on the glacier

We highly recommend this tour. The shuttle drivers and ground crew at the airport were very nice and easy going.

The flight up to the glacier was gorgeous. Evan was our pilot with smooth hand on the controls. Smooth flight!

Caleb was our guide on the mountain with his team of dogs. He was fun to talk to, as well as the other guides up there. The dogs were fun to pet and talk to. So much character in each one of those dogs.

Landing on the glacier for the second landing was great. We were encouraged to drink the glacial water, and it was so clean and pure.

We will definitely book this trip again on a future trip to Alaska. Hands down beats the dry land sledding offered by other companies, as I've compared photos and videos I've seen online.
